A Meaty Present.

The holidays are over, and the big controversy in my house is that I didn’t get any Hanukkah presents this year. At least, not yet.

My Working Mother Model.

I grew up with a working mother. When I was really little – before I can remember, even – she took some time off from being a English teacher to stay home with me, and then my brother. But somewhere in there she got bored, or needed the money, or both, and she took a part-time job for a while as a proofreader, and then as a sales rep for a pharmaceutical company. Eventually, though, and while I was still in grade school, she went back to teaching, full time.

Golden Globe Nominations Hits and Misses.

I’m tempted to start this piece with some sort of play on words, using a form of the title of the film Mamma Mia! -- seeing as though this is a column about Golden Globe nominated actresses playing mothers -- but I just can’t because every time I start seriously thinking about that Meryl Streep movie I get strains of ABBA’s “Dancing Queen” stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Who Wants to be a Super Mom?

There is a Jewish expression that says: “God could not be there all of the time; therefore he created mothers.” Oy. I blame the Talmudic scholars for creating the original Super Mom and all of the meshugas that goes along with it.

Watch Your Mouth.

My husband has a lot of wonderful qualities: he’s caring, he’s thoughtful, he’s generous, he has good taste in jewelry. But he also has some, uh, not so great qualities, as well: his taste in music, his habit of putting his dirty clothes on the floor next to the hamper, his picky palate. But perhaps his worst quality – or, at least, the quality of his that offends me the most – is his mouth.

TV Parents Behaving Badly.

What is it about grossly ill-behaved men who are portrayed on
primetime TV as being crazy about their children, while the women in their
lives -- who perpetuate their own brand of maternal madness -- put up with
them because they're so gosh darned irresistible?

It's A Post-Balance World.

We got a Wii Fit board like, eight months ago, and after gorging myself on turkey and stuffing and pumpkin pie all weekend, I decided that I should probably take it out of the box and give it a try. I created a Mii (an avatar that’s supposed to represent me on screen while I work out) and then I selected a personal trainer.

I’m seriously coveting Marian Robinson. Certainly you know who Marian Robinson is, President-Elect Barack Obama’s mother-in-law who he called the “unsung hero” of his campaign,

As Serious as a Heart Attack.

No, it really wasn’t entirely the excitement of the Obama win that has kept me from putting pen to paper or sitting down to my computer with a cup of coffee and tapping out a few pithy sentences. A little more than a week before the election, my husband Richard came home from a weekend trip and promptly had a heart attack.
