WEtv recently kicked off a brand, spankin’ new TV series with a very familiar premise: Their cameras are following a set of parents who have sextuplets – three girls, three boys – who are 16 months old. The dad works full-time and is gone from the house for the vast majority of the daylight hours, while the mom works part-time as a nurse.

The original plan -- back before the heart attack, the job layoff, and an overdue book advance—was that my oldest son Edison would go to France for a French immersion language school (borrowing from his college fund set up by grandpa).

When I tune in, I see a busy, disorganized family, just like mine. Sure, the mom’s a bit unusual because she can talk to the deceased and sometimes sees what she thinks is the future and all of that, but when I think of NBC’s, er, CBS’s drama Medium, I see a typical mom of three who struggles daily with things like keeping on top of the kids’ homework, discipline, house stuff and balancing her and her spouse’s careers . . . except for that communicating-with-the-dead-to-solve-crimes angle.
