The Supervision Situation.
“Mommy, last night I had a dream that Ben kissed me!” my six-year-old daughter Lexi told me excitedly, while perched on my bathroom sink, watching me apply my makeup. more
How Far Does The Apple Fall?
Remember when your parents used to say things to you like, someday, I hope you have a child that’s exactly like you? Well, I did. And one of the most difficult things about parenthood, for me, is having to put up with my own worst qualities on a daily basis. more
Tori Spelling: A Real Mom.
I feel as though I’ve been on a reality show binge lately, what with all the Jon & Kate and Raising Sextuplets madness. And for some reason, the Tori & Dean Home Sweet Hollywood’s fourth season called out to me and made me watch it . . . against my better judgment. more
Feeling the Looove.
By all accounts, my husband and I should have been divorced three years ago. We met in college, then spent two years in a long distance relationship, and then I dropped my entire life and moved to a new city where I didn’t know a soul in order to be with him. more
Six Times Two.
WEtv recently kicked off a brand, spankin’ new TV series with a very familiar premise: Their cameras are following a set of parents who have sextuplets – three girls, three boys – who are 16 months old. The dad works full-time and is gone from the house for the vast majority of the daylight hours, while the mom works part-time as a nurse. more
Role Model Nurses.
Move over Drs. McDreamy and McSteamy. Two brainy nurses have come to primetime and they’re kicking some serious behind. And they, frankly, don’t give a whit about hair gel like the Grey’s Anatomy hunky doctors do. more
Our Summer Experiment.
The economy being what it is, and life being what it is, we have a summer full of… no plans. The original plan -- back before the heart attack, the job layoff, and an overdue book advance—was that my oldest son Edison would go to France for a French immersion language school (borrowing from his college fund set up by grandpa). more
The Tough Careers of Army Wives.
The third season of Army Wives -- one of the few primetime programs which dramatizes the lives of the families of soldiers at a time when the nation’s still engaged in a two-front war -- kicked off Sunday night and the premiere was filled with a whole lot of people grappling with a collective identity crisis. more
Sorority Girls.
I got set up recently with a new friend – it was one of those things where we had a million mutual friends in common, all of whom thought we would really like each other, but somehow, our paths had never crossed. She’s funny, I was told, and smart, and she’s a writer, too. You’ll love her. more
Silverman's Slip-Up.
When I tune in, I see a busy, disorganized family, just like mine. Sure, the mom’s a bit unusual because she can talk to the deceased and sometimes sees what she thinks is the future and all of that, but when I think of NBC’s, er, CBS’s drama Medium, I see a typical mom of three who struggles daily with things like keeping on top of the kids’ homework, discipline, house stuff and balancing her and her spouse’s careers . . . except for that communicating-with-the-dead-to-solve-crimes angle. more
